Locust Bar: grow a spine
DJ Joe H is no longer the karaoke DJ at Locust Bar on Sundays.

I figured this was just one of those things. But it's not. Joe says he was, as he summed it up, punched in the face without provocation and fired.

Two Sundays back a drunk patron demanded to know why her friends didn't get more turns and why he was letting the "bad singers" sing. Joe explained that this is karaoke, not American Idol, and it doesn't work like that.

Joe says she made nasty remarks and they went back and forth a little. She threatened to punch him. He said "that's on you" and started to turn away. And she punched him full in the face.

She eventually admitted to punching him but claimed he "poked her in the chest real hard" first. So the owner talked to her for 20 minutes, talked to Joe for two minutes, and fired Joe the next day.

Apparently there may be a witness to some of this who tells the story differently. But Joe has been there seven and a half years and at other Philly bars for even longer, and he's never had an altercation with a customer. Why the hell would he start by hitting a woman? It's ridiculous.

Fear of lawsuits makes people do some pretty stupid stuff, eh.

DJ Lars has been hired at Locust Bar. Lars is a good guy and I'm sure he doesn't even know the story and has nothing to do with it. No one should give Lars any grief about this, it's not his doing.

But as for Locust Bar's management... the best DJ in town (with the best songbook in town) is gone from my favorite watering hole because of one loudmouthed drunk with no fucking shame whatsoever, and I'm very pissed off.

This Sunday no one (myself included) seemed to have any idea what had gone down, I didn't learn the story until I contacted Joe myself. It'll be interesting to see what happens when people realize Joe didn't leave voluntarily.

Hmmm.... one of Locust Bar's contractors is assaulted by a patron who had been served too much alcohol, and is then fired...

If a female employee (say, a waitress) was slugged by a male patron during a disagreement, the patron would be lucky to be shown the door without further damage done to him.

Most bars don't call police for small fights because it's bad for business. I just wish more snotty drunk bitches spent 13 hours in the Roundhouse waiting for their bail hearing. Perhaps then they'd realize being female does not give one carte blanche to engage in violent or otherwise inappropriate behavior, even when drunk.

the management of the Deluxe on Broadway did something similar to a friend of mine back in 2002. I haven't set foot in there since.

that bites

Joe's been there a good long time and built up a nice reputation and brought in business for them. In general I don't wish Lars any ill will and completely agree he doesn't deserve any grief but a part of me does hope he sucks so the owners pay some price for being spineless.

Re: that bites

Well, his book is nothing to Joe's, but he's a good DJ who has been successful at Ray's

That... really sucks.

*sigh* Locust bar is one of those things I keep wanting to go to more, but never have the energy come Sunday night. I guess I can put that aside now. I just wish I were a better customer so that it would make more of an impact. That's no way to run a business and no way to treat a long-standing employee.

Of course, it sounds like there's more than one side to the story. It still leaves a bad taste in my mouth though.

Say it ain't so Joe

The locust is loco. What better combo is there than JoeH and the locust? Ok, maybe JoeH and the Rooster. But if Joe's going to McGillin's on Sunday now, we and our $100 bar tab are going to McGillin's! (make that $150 bar tab at McGillin's ;o)

Re: Say it ain't so Joe

Hey Tom, great site. Not sure we ever met at the locust. I get there 4-5 times in the winter months, up here in the Poconos otherwise. I like to think I do a mean "Psycho Killer" though :o)
